Putting babies on husband’s insurance?
My husband and I are expecting twins in late August (that probably equates to mid-August since twins don’t usually go the whole 40 weeks).
Anyway, the open enrollment period for his insurance is in early September. There is pretty much no way they’ll be born once open enrollment starts.
It was my understanding that birth is a “qualifying event,” insurance-wise, so that once our kids are born they should be covered. When he approached his insurance rep with this, she stated very rudely, “You had the chance to enroll your wife last year, but you didn’t take it. Now you’ll have to wait.” (I was working, I had my own insurance). Whatever – OK, fine for ME, but what about our CHILDREN?? What do they have to do with my not being enrolled?? It makes no sense to me.
My husband’s insurance is Blue Cross Blue Shield, and we live in Texas, if that helps.
Yes, as long as your husband’s employer offers family coverage, he’ll be able to add the children (and you) when they are born.
Perhaps the HR person misunderstood and thought that your husband was trying to add you right now????
