Many road races are sanctioned. They claim the ban is a safety issue. I have been running road races for 20 years and have never seen an incident related to that. I know part of it is the price of insurance shich is significantly higher when they are allowed. Based on what research and statistics?? I would die of boredon before missing an instruction… Nyc’s response was interesting as was Marine Corps Marathon. Grandma’s did take it seriously. I know I will now never run Grandma’s.
I have to agree that it would be an issue for high level competitive runners. However, they don’t use them. I was a Div-1 track and cc runner that converted to road racing and triathlons after college. When I was truly competing at that level, I never used them either because it was not appropriate. However, most marathons are now sanctioned with the overwhelming majority not competing at that level.

I think they are worried about liability. I don’t see head phones being the problem.

The races that have announced the ban have said they can not possibly police thousands of runners, so I think this is mostly an attempt to mitigate insurance claims.

I have seen other things happen once and everyone suddenly decides this is a problem so they pass another rule.

I have never seen anyone become injured because they were listening to music.
